To the shopping center “PUPA” – thanks for fostering national identity


Vilnius Municipality has decided to award five businesses, including the shopping center “Pupa”, for their merits in fostering patriotic feelings and nurturing the symbol of national identity – language.  

Vilnius Municipality has decided to award five business companies for their merits in fostering patriotic feelings and nurturing the symbol of national identity – language, including: shopping center “Pupa”.
 
These companies, which chose Lithuanian names, were presented with letters of appreciation signed by Vilnius Mayor Vilius Navickas..
A festive gathering “Infusing what has not yet died out in the state, nation and person” organized by the Language Dissemination Subcommittee of the Public Commission for State Language Affairs of the Municipal Council was held in one of the awarded Vilnius cafes. The main theme of the gathering was the fostering of national identity in a globalizing Vilnius – the European Capital of Culture.

This is the first time that the municipality has thanked companies for using Lithuanian names. Albina Šiupienienė, head of the municipality’s state language control department, assured that when selecting the laureates, the owners of the companies were definitely not taken into account.
The name of the shopping center “Pupa” was noticed by A. Šiupienienė’s colleague – chief language manager Diana Vaičiūnienė. A. Šiupienienė praised the shopping center for the fact that its Lithuanian name is written in large letters.
