Housewarming atmosphere in the reconstructed house at Šiaulių St. 8 in Vilnius

The reconstruction of the collapsed house at Šiaulių St. 8 in Vilnius has been completed.

The reconstruction of the collapsed house at Šiaulių g. 8 in Vilnius has been completed. In December, the construction completion commission declared the building suitable for use. The construction completion certificate means that the building’s residents can use the premises and will celebrate Christmas at home.

“We have been waiting for the moment when we will be able to enjoy our homes again,” said Aušra Pakėnienė, a representative of the residents of the building. The residents, who have been impatiently waiting for the completion of the construction work, are already settling into their apartments.

“Successfully completing this project was one of the priority tasks of our company. This is a matter of business ethics and moral responsibility. We are glad that we have fulfilled our obligations to the residents of the house,” said Eugenijus Rečiūnas, development director of Panevėžio keliai, one of the companies that financed the reconstruction work.

Audrius Smaliukas, director of the claims center of the insurance company “If”, one of the main financiers of the construction and which compensated the residents for the losses, states that the Šiaulių Street case is one of the most complex in the company’s history, therefore it is considered a considerable achievement that the house was rebuilt within the agreed time frame and budget, without sacrificing the quality of the reconstruction work..

“We actively participated in the process, aiming to solve a problem that concerns the residents of the entire block. We tried to make Šiaulių Street a nice place to live again, and this unpleasant story forgotten,” said Robertas Liudvinavičius, project manager at “Sektor”.

The general contractor for the reconstruction of the house at Šiaulių g. 8, UAB “Eikos statyba”, completed all the planned works on time. Within eight months, according to the prepared work project, the uncollapsed structures were strengthened, the collapsed part of the building was restored, interior finishing works were carried out, internal and external engineering networks were installed, and the area around the house was arranged. According to Rytis Ivanauskas, director of “Eikos statyba”, the most difficult part of this project was working in a limited area of the construction site, since it was necessary to approach heavy transport on a narrow street in the old town and install bulky products. The production and installation of the facade elements and ornaments of the house also required sensitivity.

“We are glad that we can keep the promise we made to the residents of the Šiaulių g. house – to celebrate Christmas in our own homes. We would also like to thank all the residents of Šiaulių street and surrounding houses for their understanding and patience during the reconstruction work, as during the entire construction period, not a single complaint was received regarding noise, dust, traffic restrictions, or the closure of Šiaulių street,” said R.Ivanauskas.

As already announced, an agreement to rebuild the collapsed house at Šiaulių g. 8 in Vilnius Old Town and compensate the residents for the damage suffered was reached in December 2009. The settlement agreement was then signed by all interested parties – the developer of the “Mikalojaus žiedas” project – “Sektor”, the former general contractor – “Constructus”, the insurance company “If P&C Insurance AS” and the residents of the house that suffered from the collapse. In accordance with the settlement agreement, all parties abandoned the lawsuits that had closed the courts. “Constructus”’s obligations in the settlement agreement regarding the reconstruction of the house were assumed by its main shareholder – “Panevėžio keliai”. The accident occurred on 25 January 2007.

The total amount of the house reconstruction and compensation paid to the residents amounts to LTL 3 million. These costs were shared by the companies that signed the settlement agreement with the affected residents: the developer of the “Mikalojaus žiedas” project – “Sektor”, the insurance company “If P&C Insurance AS” and AB “Panevėžio keliai”.
