“Eika” is preparing to detonate an art bomb in Vilnius

Before starting the construction of a new business center in Vilnius, real estate developer Eika decided to revive an ambulance station on Žalgirio Street that had been standing for many years, instead of demolishing an abandoned building.

The internationally famous phenomenon of talented artists reviving abandoned buildings and temporarily transforming them into works of art is finally reaching Lithuania. Before starting the construction of a new business center in Vilnius, real estate developer Eika decided to revive an ambulance station on Žalgirio Street that had stood for many years instead of demolishing the abandoned building.

“Our idea to set up a temporary art gallery in an abandoned building is also a test for Lithuanian artists. It is a test: is Lithuania ready for a world-famous art form?” says Viktorija Orkinė, director of the property management department of Eika.

In recent years, temporary art workshops have become widespread around the world and have attracted particular public interest. This type of event, which brings together representatives of different economic, cultural and professional backgrounds who want to create and seek inspiration together by using abandoned buildings as a creative space, has already been implemented in Tokyo, Paris and other cities. It is hoped that Lithuanian artists and the public will not miss this unique opportunity.

“The main idea of the project is the transience of art. This exhibition will be a ticking art bomb that will explode when the building is demolished, and in its place a 15,000 sq. m. class A business center and apartment complex will rise,” says a representative of the company “Eika”.

Freelance artists, art students and all art lovers are invited to participate in the unprecedented creative competition in Lithuania. Project participants will have complete freedom to create and convert the building. The company “Eika” will also finance the installation of art installations, and visiting the temporary gallery will be free of charge. It is planned that the temporary art gallery at Žalgirio g. 135, Vilnius will open its doors to visitors on March 1.

The company “Eika” is announcing a competition and is waiting for applications with presentations of ideas until February 17.
