The company UAB “EIKA Construction” (formerly “EIKOS statyba”) completed the maintenance work on the territory of Tauras Kalnas in Vilnius in December. The place of special historical importance for the city will be reborn anew – pedestrian paths, recreation, leisure, sports, green areas will appear here, and the environment will be prepared for the National Concert Hall planned to be built here..
EIKA Construction signed the contract for the management of the Tauras Kalnas territory in September 2022 and then began work. According to Almantas Čebanauskas, the head of EIKA Construction, it was an extraordinary task.
“Our work was to use architectural and landscape measures to improve a historically important territory for the city, which is surrounded by an urbanized environment. We had to take into account aesthetic and recreational aspects and adapt the environment to the needs of the National Concert Hall being designed on Taurus Mountain, and also consider making the environment comfortable for people with special needs,” said A. Čebanauskas.
Taking into account the functional connections that have been formed, pedestrian paths, recreation, games, sports and other leisure areas were designed, as well as green areas, lighting, rainwater collection and video surveillance systems were installed.
“Since the object is located in a protected cultural heritage area, one of the biggest challenges was to smoothly regulate the work so that it did not interfere with archaeological research. During excavations and the discovery of remains or valuable items, work in that area is stopped, so it was necessary to think through scenarios in advance on how to react flexibly,” said the head of EIKA Construction.
It was also necessary to take into account the peculiarities of the terrain. The territory, which occupies about 82,400 square meters, is located in an expressive terrain, the height difference of which is 36.42 m. The terrain rises from the intersection of Pamėnkalnis and V. Kudirkos streets in a southeasterly direction towards the intersection of Tauras and V. Mykolaitis-Putinas streets.
