Art can last for centuries or just a few moments. From March 7, a unique creative space “LINK menų” will be temporarily located in an abandoned building on Žalgirio Street, where live concerts, dance improvisations, poetry readings in rap style, light installations, and acrobatic performances by fakirs will take place. After the event, the building will be demolished. In this way, the real estate development company “Eika”, students of the Vilnius Academy of Arts (VDA), together with other representatives of contemporary art, will invite you to experience the transience of art.
The idea of reviving old, unused buildings and briefly turning them into art objects is a popular phenomenon around the world. Famous artists from New York, Tokyo, London, and Paris are “occupying” buildings scheduled for demolition and briefly breathing life into them.
“The artists accepted our challenge. The invitation to participate in the art test showed that Lithuania is already ready for such an unexpected art form. In the first competition of its kind in the country, “Erdvės menui” (Space for Art), artists submitted a variety of ideas: from photography exhibitions and installations to performances. We hope that the building, forgotten by everyone for a few days, will become a center of attraction for Vilnius residents,” says Viktorija Orkinė, Head of the Property Management Department at “Eika”.
Fakir performances and rapped poetry
The winner of the competition “Space for Art” was a team of VDA students, who proposed to implement a whole series of events in the building. Creators who did not win but submitted original ideas were also invited to join the project. Several different events will take place in the spaces of the unused building every evening.
Set designer Barbora Guželytė will present the performance “Gifts”. Live sound improvisations will be performed by Rokas Grajauskas, better known by the pseudonym “Jama&W”. It will be possible to hear not only recited, sung, but also rapped poetry. And excerpts from famous works – Balis Sruoga’s “Forest of the Gods” and Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s “The Little Prince” – will be read by actor Raimundas Lukšas.
A separate performance is promised by masters of contact improvisation. They will organize an unusual light installation, where fakir performances, light projections and the capabilities of the human body will be combined. Those who come to this space will become not only spectators, but also participants, as there will be graphic design, batik, papermaking and even dance workshops.
The gallery will be open for several days
Violeta Mackialo, the organizer and team leader of the VDA artistic project, says that the authentic space gave freedom to unlimited imagination. Together with other students of the Vilnius Academy of Arts, she will create what she says will be a little more than short events.
“We want to encourage creators to step out of their comfort zone and create together with someone from another specialty, whose vision of the world may seem very different at first glance. Therefore, the events will be interactive, innovative and improvised. It doesn’t matter that the building is counting down its last days. The art created in this space will live longer than the created matter. What is temporary will become eternal. Because everyone, whether creator or viewer, will take away a part of the spirit of this space. It is the connection between people and what will remain after the event is over that will be eternity,” says V. Mackialo.
The temporary gallery and art workshop (Žalgirio g. 135) will open its doors on March 7. Anyone wishing to see the program prepared by the VDA team and performances by other artists will be able to do so on March 7, 8, and 11. The closing event will take place on March 14.
In early April, the building, which will house a temporary art gallery, will be demolished. It is planned that a 15,000 square meter B+ class business center and apartment complex “Žalgirio 135” will be built in place of the abandoned and unused first aid station.
