Construction of a new junior high school, located at Pavilnionių g. 25, will soon begin in the Perkūnkiemis district of Vilnius. It will be carried out by UAB EIKA Construction for EUR 28.2 million. The company won a public procurement organized by Vilnius Development Company, a real estate development company of Vilnius Municipality.
The junior high school will be built on an area of 1.48 hectares. The four-story building will accommodate about 612 students, have 22 classrooms, and have a staff of about 65 teachers.
“The local community has been waiting for this junior high school for a long time – a school close to home truly improves the quality of life for the whole family. It also contributes to our long-term 15-minute city vision, according to which basic services can be reached without using a car. We are delighted with this truly exceptional educational institution project, based on modern solutions and a new approach to the learning environment,” says Vilnius City Mayor Valdas Benkunskas.
The selected contractor will have to build a modern architectural school by September 2027. It will include a swimming pool, an internal school courtyard, and an atrium. The courtyard will become the common center of the school – a place for meetings, breaks, and outdoor activities. The “heart” of the junior high school – a full-height atrium – will provide the space with light and openness.
“Finally, we will start what we have been preparing for a long time – the children of Perkūnkiemis will have a new school with a swimming pool. Five years ago, we put together a plan for this district with the community. Now, one of the main elements of this plan, a new school, is becoming a reality. On September 1, 2027, more than 600 children will begin a new stage by going to a new, good school,” says Vilnius Vice Mayor Vytautas Mitalas.
Progymnasium students will be able to access the school yard and sports fields directly from the second floor, and a play area will even be installed on the library roof. The contractor will have to install an open garden on the third floor, and a terrace on the fourth floor, where children will be able to continue their science lessons.
“We pay special attention to the sustainability of schools and strengthening community spirit. One example of this is the installation of a solar module power plant on the roof of this school, which will help develop children’s understanding of sustainable energy. A swimming pool has been designed in the school, which will also be accessible to other residents. A 2,000 sq m sports field will be installed next to the school, under which there will be a shelter, and its public spaces will also contribute to the formation of the face and identity of the Perkūnkiemis district,” says Laura Joffė, head of the Vilnius Development Company, which is developing the project.
There are two hall complexes for sports: a large hall – about 1050 sq. m, and a small hall – for additional activities. The school will also have a swimming pool with a separate entrance, which will be accessible to the community after school hours.
The school will feature specialized classrooms: sewing, science, metal and wood workshops, a training kitchen, a theater and cinema hall, as well as an innovative digital production workshop.
Almantas Čebanauskas, the head of EIKA Construction, which will build the junior high school, says that the company is extremely pleased with the opportunity to contribute to the strategic development of the city’s educational infrastructure.
“The construction of this junior high school is an opportunity to apply the accumulated experience in creating a modern educational environment, ensuring the highest standards of quality, functionality and sustainability. It is important for us to contribute to projects that create real value for the city and we very much hope that this school will become a safe, functional and long-lasting space for future generations,” says A. Čebanauskas.
The new junior high school was designed by MB “De architectura” together with UAB “Baltic Engineers” (brands: “Office De Architectura” and “Be Live”, respectively), who, when creating this school, sought to move away from the usual, formal institutional image of the school.
