“Eikos statyba” built an Infectious Diseases Hospital in Vilnius

Vilnius has been struggling with an infectious diseases hospital in very poor condition for many years – the hospital, located in Žvėrynas wooden buildings built in 1905, may have been valuable from an architectural point of view as a heritage site for the Žvėrynas district, but it did not fulfill its function: seriously ill patients were treated there in unsanitary and even health-threatening conditions. In 2019, the company “Eikos statyba” completed the construction of a new modern tuberculosis and infectious diseases hospital with an area of almost 8 thousand m2 in the town of Santara. This institution will have 100 beds for tuberculosis treatment, and 50 beds for other infectious diseases. The Ministry of Health has allocated 5.88 million euros for the implementation of this project.

Almantas Čebanauskas, the head of the company “Eikos statyba”, says that during the construction of this facility, the company he leads was the general contractor of the project, responsible for the preparation of the entire work design of the facility and the implementation of general construction and special works. The latest technologies were used for the construction of the building, and it was necessary to manage the work of various subcontractors. Special attention was paid to ventilation systems and regulating the flow of people.

“It was necessary to separate one unit (the infectious diseases hospital) from another (the tuberculosis hospital). Separate entrances to the units were designed for this purpose so that infected patients would not have the opportunity to meet. The tuberculosis unit also has separate, isolated courtyards for patients to walk around,” says A. Čebanauskas.

The company “Eikos statyba” performed structural and general construction works at this facility, installed outdoor water supply and sewage lines, installed a frame and mounted large-sized ventilated ceramic panels on it. It also cleaned up the hospital environment.

“A ventilated facade system was installed, consisting of a rod frame system and about 5.6 thousand m2 of porcelain ceramic panel finishes,” says A. Čebanauskas, head of “Eikos statyba”. “The rod facade frame system consists of stainless steel rods and braces that cross the insulation layer, held by profiles made of aluminum. The supporting profiles do not come into contact with the insulation layer and are installed above the thermal insulation layer, therefore they do not form a cold bridge through this layer.”

Since the new infectious diseases hospital is in energy class A, great attention had to be paid to ensuring the quality of the building’s sealing work.
