Psychologist: the first signs of workaholism and how to avoid them?

Workaholism is a common problem among modern people, which affects not only their health, home, and loved ones, but, paradoxically, also their work itself.

Workaholism is a common problem among modern people, which affects not only their health, home, and loved ones, but, paradoxically, their work itself. According to psychologists, if you feel tired and stressed, and you think about unfinished work even on weekends and during vacations, it’s time to get worried – these are the first signs of workaholism.

Today, as shown by a Eurobarometer survey commissioned by the European Commission, one in five Lithuanians (21%) find it difficult to balance work and home. This means that sooner or later they risk falling into workaholism, the first signs of which, according to psychologist Dr. Marius Daugelavicius, may be barely noticeable at first.

“Working a lot in itself is not a bad thing. However, it is worse if work begins to take up most of one’s life. At first, a person may feel chronic fatigue, complain of constant tension or an inability to relax, but these are the first signals that they are at risk of workaholism. It also happens that without work, a person simply has nothing else to do, feels inadequate, tends to become depressed, these are really serious problems,” says the psychologist.

According to M. Daugelavicius, workaholism is also indicated by taking unfinished work home. However, those who work from home fall into a vicious circle – they no longer have the energy to complete the work at home, so they take it to work again in the morning.

Martynas Žibūda, development director of real estate development company Eika, is convinced that it is becoming increasingly difficult for modern people to find a balance between home and work. According to him, today we live in a constant rush, when working as much and as long as possible has become the norm.

“When working without breaks, it is often forgotten that tired and therefore unproductive employees are not needed in the labor market. Today, a good employee is not someone who works after hours and does not leave the computer on weekends. A good employee knows how to plan his time and balances work with leisure, rest, sleep, and home. To remind us of this, we are organizing “Home Day” for the second year, during which we invite you to spend as much time as possible at home and devote more time to them,” says M. Žibūda.

This year, “Home Day” will be celebrated on November 19. All Lithuanian companies are encouraged to join it. According to an Eika representative, each employee can celebrate this day in their own way – by finishing work earlier, returning home sooner, cleaning the house, dedicating time to family, a good book, or just sleeping.

M. Daugelavicius also believes that home and good rest are one of the most effective remedies for workaholism. According to him, there is no medicine for workaholism that you can take and then live peacefully again. To get out of this problem, you need desire and will.

“First, set priorities: what is most important to you in life. I have no doubt that for many it will be family and health. Then, change your routine when you get home from work – put your work phone aside, forget about your computer. Find an activity you enjoy that, in layman’s terms, will “disconnect” you. It can be sports, meditation, jogging, reading, cooking. In addition, do not take work home, and in no case mix work and home space,” advises the psychologist.
